This is Twitter Knitting & this is how I have gained every single one of my Fabulous Followers and I Thank You ALL….
A conversation started on Twitter the other day that opened my eyes to something I had no clue about…this is not unusual… #rarelysober…
I was chatting with some FAB Tweeps… I believe it was @clippo that tweeted out about Non- Celebrities having 10′s of thousands of followers just doesn’t seem to fit and that they had to be fake followers…WHAT? …and then tweeted out this Article from Media Bistro… I read it and was blown away…I had no clue about a Fake Follower Count..and more so…Why would someone be NEEDY enough to have to do it…One word…SAD…
But then in hit…THIS is how someone can have 20k followers on a Monday and then 25k+ the Friday… I just thought I was doing it wrong… #LifeStory
Then @beingmarci joined the convo about how she was offered 1000 new followers for a few Hundred Bucks…WHAT THE WHAT? I am so in the dark… #rarelysober
BUY FOLLOWERS?? That is so a waste of good shoe and booze money…
As per the beauty of Twitter a great conversation ensued, with Clippo, Being Marci, @phdinparenting @youarefirece and @nugglemama …thank you ladies for allowing me to use your true Twitter Identity…We chatted about how having great content can get you followers
Conversation aside it made me think…
Gaining a follower, a REAL follower is hard work…With ReTweets, great content, twitter parties etc…you interact, you engaged you share…YOU SHARE..emotion, life, laughs…With being REAL…
I have been on Twitter Since September 2 2008, 1270 days ago…at this point I have sent out 73, 635 tweets and have 8,214 Followers…a few less after I post this I am sure…
I am sure I have lost more followers than I will ever gain… #nobraintomouthfilter
I don’t know about all these crazy ways to boosts your followers or why someone would need such a FALSE inflated feeling of self importance…but I do know 1 thing…
I LOVE TWITTER…
I LOVE TWEETING…
I LOVE TWOITERS…
And the Social Media Profile I have built up on Twitter was WORK…HARD WORK…I have tweeted EVERY SINGLE DAY since I opened my account.
I have RT’d…Followed…Been Followed…Been Unfollowed…Trolled, Spammed, Sworn at, Swore…Shared GREAT Content…Shared SHITTY content…I have screwed up, been inspired, angered, motivated, cried, laughed, learned…Won…Worked…and just WANTED TO BE…a better person, a better writer, a better friend, a better…All because of Twitter.
This conversation made me look twice and some Twoiters…but mostly it made me even more thankful for the FABULOUS TWOITERS THAT FOLLOW ME…and…SOOO Appreciate the ones that I get the deevine pleasure of sharing my life with…some online only and Some…I have been blessed enough to make my now most cherished friends, in real life…
With me…On Twitter and in Real Life…What you see is what you get… ( although on Twitter my Ass is firmer & my Breast Perkier)
I wish I could that all of and everyone that has ever cyber touched me personally…but this will have to do…
Ahh, yes. I have noticed this as well. If you look at someone’s ‘following’ feed, you can see if they bought followers – it’s all people that speak other languages!! = spam!
Worse yet, I seen the same thing with FB. People can buy fans for their pages too.
Very sad, esp. when they claim to have ‘true readership.
Gag!
crazy eh? I have heard about this too. not sure why anyone would bother to inflate their follower lists…ok I do but it is still sad. I think twitter is all about engaging, talking, connecting…isn’t that the point? Not buying friends…that is just sad in real life too!
Wonderful post. Thank you Dee. As always you make learning fun. I am still fairly new to twitter and have really enjoyed following you, reading your articles and always enjoy your sense of humour. Cheers
Well said! I’ve been here 3 yrs this past wknd! I still only have approx 1300 followers, but mainly b/c I only follow those that actually interest me! Why bother otherwise!?
CHEERS! xo
In my absolute innocence, or blondness, I had no idea this even happened. I’m a baby tweeter and out there simply enjoying meeting interesting people, sharing stories, having a good snorting laugh with and being inspired by them. I’ll take my little band of followers and be happy with that because they’re there for the right reasons. Except the busty ones. I don’t know why they’re there.
I don’t remember when I followed you but I know I adored you from the very beginning and if I ever unfollow you, it’s not me – it’s twitter being an asshole.
I don’t remember the date but I know it was early in my twitter life that I was blessed to find your stream…sounds so dirty…and if I unfollow you it is Twitter’s fault as well…It is Twoits like you that make Twitter such a fabulous place…xo
Indeed, building a following takes a rediculous amount of hard work. When I started in March 08 (see, I’m older than you….) I used to actually block bots and spam, to not have my following counts go up artificially. I wanted to know everyone who followed me was real. I work really hard to engage and interact with the people I follow. They actually MEAN something….
I am so relieved to read this article, I have not been actively on twitter until this past January and am very slowly building my followers up, just as I am on my blog. I do not want to build a readership based on lies and “follow me and I’ll follow you” requests. I want to make true connections and at the end of each day feel like I have accomplished something real.
My friend @Karen_C_Wilson once told me that there were people who would pay $2 to $3 per twitter follower. I dreamed about paying off my mortgage and starting fresh, but unfortunately it doesn’t work that way!
#buyingfriends I mean followers? Is that like buying a #mailorderhusband from Alaska? Seriously, the only one I’d consider is the last one due to the rugged attractiveness of the men. Every friend I’ve made on twitter has been work, other than the spammy prostitute types and they are entitled to follow me if they wish. #itsafreetwitterverse. Besides it’s not the size of your following it’s how you use it.
I caught part of that conversation too and I was floored. Read a few articles/posts and remained floored. I have less than 1000 followers but a number of them have become very good friends. Heck, some of them even tried to save my life once, right Dee? I’ll take my followers and friends waaaaay before I’ll buy them. (Actually, the Leafs *may* win the Cup before I’ll buy a single follower).
Well said! I have just over 3,200 followers – it took me 3 years to gain them but I did it myself through just being in the online community as you said sharing and RTing and engaging! That’s what SM is all about!
Knitting?! You mean to tell me I’ve been KNITTING and I didn’t even realize it?! #grabsthatbottleofvodkaandswigs Great post Dee and hellz to the yah booze money, er I mean SHOE money is far to important to be spent on sheep, BAH, I mean followers! #whatthehellisinthisvodkaDee
